Globalization Essay
Globalization is an issue that involves the whole world. It’s a problem that causes many people hard times. Globalization is the process by which regional economies, societies, and cultures have become integrated through a global network of political ideas through communication, transportation and trade. Globalization offers many advantages to people and businesses. Which are greater employment opportunities for people, availability of greater variety of goods and services to the consumers, more competitive price to the competitors, ability of companies to achieve lower costs, access too bigger markets to business firms, and faster and wider spread of new technologies across the world. Yet, there are many disadvantages too which are unrestricted globalization can hamper the development of less developed countries, smaller firms may lack the resources to compete internationally and therefore may be forced out of business, countries become very dependent on other countries for meeting their need for goods and service’s. This can become a major disadvantage in situations like war, economic conditions in one country can move to other countries and may even adopt global proportion, globalization may also lead to faster spread of infectious diseases for people, animals and plants. Such infection may be carried through the people or goods. Globalization controls how we see other people around the world and how we rank economically around the world. Over the year’s globalizations have controlled organizations like the IMF and the WTO but ultimately citizens become frustrated with these organizations because of the unfair benefits they are receiving.
Globalization impacts the problems surrounding human trafficking because there is a direct connection. People are trading all around the world because they need cheep labor. Cheap labor is when a person works hard for very little money usually under bad conditions. Cheap labor usually happens in factories. People suffer a lot just because they are being used for profit. “Famous brands like Nike, the Coca-Cola Company, and many others all do this. In some respect it is a cycle of competition driving each other to such measures to keep up and to maximize profits. Nike, for example use cheap labor in South East Asia, where they can get away from the tighter enforcement and regulations of USA and Europe. In fact, they have been exposed for using child labor, as well. Coca Cola for example, have been accused of intimidating workers around the world, even hiring (often indirectly, through intermediaries) paramilitaries to intimidate or kill union leaders.” ( Corporations and Worker’s Rights) This shows that children are forced into doing this as well. The thing that is being argued in this is that human trafficking resembles what American slavery looked like in the 18 and 19th century. The industry exploits vulnerable women and minors for a profit. “It victims are exploited for labor, including commercial sex. To contrail their victims, traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion, including techniques such as confinement, beating, rape, confiscation of documents, debt bondage, false offers of employment, and treats of harm to the victim or the victim’s family” (Potocky, 2010).
Human Trafficking happens because women and children get sold. Many of these victims are not able to do anything about what is going on with them. For this same reason the traffickers take advantage of them. “Many are paid little or nothing for their services”(Human Trafficking,2011). These people go through this in a way that only benefits others. The way that traffickers make money is by selling the victims into the sex industries.
Globalization is the process by which all people and communities come to experience an increasingly common economic, social and cultural environment. By just the definition the whole process affects everybody throughout the world. It affects the balance of economic, political and cultural power between nations, communities and individuals and it can both enhance and also limit freedoms and human rights. Social workers, by nature of the work that they produce tend to meet those who are more likely to have suffered the damaging consequences of some aspects of globalization. Specifying exactly how globalization affects the economic status of countries or individuals is not that easy at all. The effects of globalization may be due to competition among some workers, or foreign investment, or trade, or government borrowing. There is no single measure of integration into the world economy. Each aspect of integration can have variable effects as everything else as well.
