Reflection
Ever since freshman year and I heard of this so called “The Fire Project” it really scared me. When we were told that if we didn’t complete this we would not be able to graduate Social Justice high school. Over the years all I always heard is that it was had and that it takes a lot of your time. By the time I got to senior year I would tell my mom that I wanted to leave the school because I didn’t want to do this project and I didn’t think I was going to be able to get through this big project. Then here came April, we began to talk about our issue that most interest us. Began to do research on it to see if that was the topic that we really wanted to be stuck with for a whole month or so. If later we decided to change our mind then it would be too late. Then everything had to get done over for the new topic. After all this, I found the topic that really interested me and I wanted to learn more about it which was human trafficking. Ever since this day I felt more relieved about this whole fire project. Yet, everything was just beginning to pile up on me. I kind of felt like it was never going to end. It was so much to do in so little time I felt. The hardest thing was writing all the essays for this project. The one that I really enjoyed writing was the expository research paper because that essay is how I learned so much about my issue. Things that I did not even know about before this topic even came to my mind. From this project I learned to do things on my own better. Not depending on my classmates to do the work for me or wait to see if they got it done or not. Like nobody had the same topic as me I couldn’t really go to anybody for help or anything. So I had to do all my work on my own. Which I think really helped me and will really help me more in the future. Everything that we did to complete this huge fire project issue will really stay with me for the rest of my life. Like I said I was so scared of this project. It wasn’t as bad I thought it was going to be. And, got a lot out of it. In the process of the Fire Project, I learned, questioned and was able to figure out what text meant. The process was not easy but because our skills developed I was able to share them out loud and in paper. Great skills that I attained include comprehension leadership skills, research skills, organizing skills and such that I was able to improve everyday. First of all, the readings in class helped me develop comprehension skills, especially with the difficult scholarly writings that i have never work with before. An example of this would be the work of Freire, The Pedagogy of the Oppressed. With these readings I was able to ask questions and understand the matter or it. I’ll know how to take something so serious to try to make a change in the world. How to just research a topic and then taking action in a way that will benefit the community and people of becoming aware of such problems that we have. I learned that taking action isn’t the hardest thing in the world. Rising awareness I think really helped for my issue because many people did not even know that such thing was a big issue. This was a great experience yet, again very stressful trying to met all the requirements and deadlines on time. Putting everything up on the website, making it look nice. Everything took time, but at the end it is all going to be worth it.
